Vote | Too Bougie To Vote!

Earlier this month, the 2018 midterm elections were held throughout the United States. The midterm elections are held halfway between the presidential elections, and during these elections, voters elect the 435 members of the U.S. House of Representatives and 1/3 of the U.S. Senate. By casting a vote in these elections, voters are virtually submitting an appraisal on the president's performance and potentially shifting the balance of power. I’m talking about flexing political muscles!

Perplexing as it is to me, I came across several individuals who told me they were not going to vote. I was taken aback by their remarks. One individual commented “just like I have the right to vote, I also have the right not to vote!” Another individual said “I don’t like the process, so I’m not going to participate in it.” I am truly baffled as to why any citizen, of the United States, would choose not to exercise their right to vote, considering all that has been sacrificed to gain the right. These attitudes toward voting, in my opinion, are not of the bourgeoisie, they are simply bougie. For the one reason someone chooses not to vote, there are one hundred reasons why they should vote.
